What advice would you give to new students coming to Beirut to study Arabic?
Coming to a new country and learning a new language can be intimidating, but the paitence, support, and cultural education you recieve from the Lebanese, makes the experience more fabulous than you could ever imagine.
In terms of advice to students coming to study in Beirut I would say that when speaking arabic on the street or in the classroom don’t be afraid to make mistakes/ have a go – as this is the way you improve and familiarise yourself with the language. Many people in Beirut (particularly in Hamra) speak good English so I would encourage students to try not to fall into a comfort zone and speak and absorb as much Arabic as they can, whether it is ordering food in a restaurant, or conversing with the locals by the corniche, or watching Lebanese TV.
