Walaw literally means “and even if.” It is one of those little phrases in Spoken Lebanese that can convey a number of different things. Listen to what some of the ALPS staff had to say when asked how they use “walaw.” You’ll hear the phrase used to express frustration, amazement, to make someone feel welcome, and to say “Don’t mention it,” when someone tells you thanks.
If you want to hear more, listen to Wadih El Safi’s song. The ALPS director, Joelle, has translated this song into English. Check out her work to better understand the meaning of the lyrics.
